January 10, 2015 THATCHING – An Introduction.
Saturday. Arrive 9:30a. Class 10a – 5p. Taught by Deanne Bednar
Learn about the basics of thatching a roof, tour thatched buildings, see a demonstration of thatching on a small frame, and try your hand at it a bit. Learn the strategies of identifying and storing reed ~ when to harvest and when to thatch, and see a video on thatching. Then we will go to a site about 10 minutes away, where you will check out the reed fields & see a demo on reed collection. Consider staying on or coming back Sunday to practice harvesting reed & volunteer. See below.
$50 with RSVP or $35 prepaid 2 weeks in advance. Limited to 12 students. Register
Come harvest reed with us on Sunday if you can !
January 11 – 10a – 2p No charge. We will be harvesting Reed in a local Field and you are welcome to get some more experience. Overnight accommodations available.
We will be going to a local field 10 minutes away, and you can practice harvesting reed, and contribute towards the collecting of reed for Strawbale Studio workshops & projects.
WHAT TO BRING
Bring a BAG LUNCH for Saturday and extra food if you’re staying overnight. Anything will do.
Optional: Bring a water bottle and perhaps a thermos for a warm drink. Camera, notebook, print our the Thatching Google doc to bring with you if you wish.
Dress WARMLY : loose boots, wool or insulated sox if you have them, ski pants or a few layers of sweat pants (jeans are COLD). Hats, some work gloves. We will be both indoors & outdoors.
If staying overnight, bring bedding if you can.. There are some beds and cots, and the floor. Bring a mattress if you can. If you can’t – we will work it out ! Bring some extra food to share for supper and Sunday if you can. We can cook together.
