The Kensington Kids Cottage is located at the Farm Center within Kensington Metropark outside Detroit Michigan. The structure was built in 2006-7 with grants from the State of Michigan energy Office, and Raisin River Institute.
The Cottage, designed for children, uses primarily local materials & a variety of traditional, natural building techniques ! It demonstrates three types of wall systems including straw bale, compressed earth block and wattle & daub construction, plus a field stone foundation & a real thatched roof made of Phragmites Reed Grass. Most of the materials were harvested at the Farm Center or nearby ! Several Green Builders helped design and build the structure, along with hands-on help from Volunteers, Wwoofers, Park Staff and Youth.
