Tracy Priska, Ceramics Instruction from The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC) brought artists from the ceramics program to an Earth Sculpting class at Struawbale Studio. It was an amazingly creative and flowing day!  These students, familiar with using clay as a medium, had an opportunity to translate their skills to the medium of “clay/sand subsoil”.  They toured the buildings and saw how local hand-harvested subsoil can be used in many artistic and practical applications: sculptures, benches, wall systems, earth ovens & more.

We sifted the subsoil, mixed it with water, then created a variety of sculptural projects!  The Strawbale Studio was a welcoming and cozy space  – and is, in itself, a form of earth sculpture!  The woodstove brought an elemental warmth and aliveness to this already very “alive” group of awesome folks.

At the end of the day, folks took home their new sculptures plus the extra “Cob” sculpting mix to share with those unable to come that day.
