Monthlong Program Teaches Natural Building, Sculpting and Cooking

Natural Awakenings News: Monthlong Program Teaches Natural Building, Sculpting and Cooking

Strawbale Studio’s Winternship is scheduled for January 5 through February 5, 2023, and applications are now being accepted through Eventbrite. Room and board is provided at Strawbale Studio, with the expectation that winterns contribute to household cleaning and cooking. The program leader is Deanne Bednar, who is the illustrator of Hand-Sculpted House and Natural Plaster Book and has 20 years of experience in natural building.

“Strawbale Studio seeks to empower others to take part in the construction of structures and environments that are ecologically sustainable and beautiful.,” explains Bednar. “The 2023 Winternship will be similar to the 2021 Winternship that was canceled because of COVID-19. Activities may include attending workshops on thatching, round poles, earth plaster and sculpting; using an earth oven and rocket stove; constructing a reed tipi and loft railing; and receiving instruction on natural building design and principles.”

The cost for the month is $950, with a discount for advance prepayment. After being accepted, winterns can make payments via PayPal. Individuals may be able to receive academic credit through their college programs.

Strawbale Studio is located outside of Oxford. For more information, call Deanne Bednar at 248-496-4088, email ecoartdb@gmail.com or visit StrawbaleStudio.org/events.
